Think About it.

Have you ever noticed that these three words sound alike?

chowder
chedder
chatter

My dear Slovene friend could not for the life of her hear the difference when I said these three words. I must admit, I never realized that these words sounded so similar. And also it kinds becomes a tongue twister when you say them fast.

What a great example of how foreigners hear words different than native speakers. Because we don't put cheddar and chatter in the same mental folders in our head they don't sound anything alike to us - completely different, we say.

I have the same experience in Czech. I often think two words sound similar - and Czech people think it's odd because they're "totally different" to them. WE have a worship song that makes me think that we're "ironing" Jesus because the worship word sounds like iron to me...but it's completely different to everyone else.

Glad you have an example of the problem the other way around.
